Welcome to Media and Collective Identity

Unit G325 is in two sections, Section A refers to reflection of the practical work you have undertaken on the course, and in Section B we are studying the topic, Media and Collective Identity, with a particular focus on 'social realism' in British film and TV.

The exam is 2 hours and you have to answer both parts of Section A (1a and 1b) and one question from a choice of 2 for Section B. Each section carries 50 marks so you must allow equal time in the exam.

The exam board have provided four prompts for this exam and you should be prepared to write an essay that relates to one or more of them. The prompts for this unit are:

  • how do the contemporary media represent nations, regions and ethnic/social/collective groups of people in different ways?
  • how does contemporary representation compare to previous time periods?
  • what are the social implications of different media representations of groups of people?
  • to what extent is human identity increasingly 'mediated'?

You will view a number of texts in class but you will also receive a recommended list of both film and TV to view in your own time to provide you with a broader knowledge and experience. Some of these will be available to borrow from the department using the normal booking procedures.
